March Abu Dhabi-based NSCC in joint venture with local Kingdom Group has been awarded a contract worth $6 million for marine works on the Al-Marsa Floating City phase of the Amwaj Islands real estate development. The main elements of the contract include design and construction of sheet-piled quay wall, comprising a cathodic protection belt. NSCC will also carry out extensive earthworks behind the quay wall and dredge an internal channel area to create an artificial canal system, around which a number of residential and commercial sites are earmarked for development. The local office of Cyprus-based Charilaos Apostolodes (Chapo) is carrying out the main infrastructure works for the residential element of the project, which will eventually comprise up to 360 housing units. Lebanon's Tabet Enterprises is understood to be close to finalising the contract for the basic civil infrastructure package on the island, which includes road surfacing, duct crossings and sewerage facilities. Further packages expected to go to tender this year include the construction of main bridges that will link the various residential zones. A team of local Ismail Khonji Associates with UK's High-Point Rendel is working on the designs. The client is also evaluating bids from consultants for the design of canal gates and a sluice system. - 09th
March The next contract to be tendered will be for sheet piling work, followed before the end of 2003 by a tender for the construction of bridges linking the residential zones. An award is also expected in the fourth quarter of 2003 for the consultancy contract for the design of canal gates and a sluice system. Bids are currently under evaluation. - 09th
March Local Al-Mahara Contracting has been awarded a contract to construct a reinforced earth and masonry block wall around the lagoon at the centre of the islands resort development. Value of the contract has not been disclosed, but is thought to be worth several million dollars. Another local firm, Aject International, has won a contract to carry out sheet piling work on the canal walls at the neighbouring Al-Marsa Floating City development.
