Work continues on unique four multi-storeyed car parking facilities at one of Bahrain’s most prestigious heritage sites which will also serve as space to host concerts, prayers and markets. The structures feature curved slabs that create a continuous transition from one level to the other; the four projects follow the same architectural concept, where slabs change from concave to convex, touching each other and creating a continuous spatial transition. One of the structures connected to the Muharraq’s Pearling Path, located at the intersection of two main roads opposite Shaikh Isa Bin Ali House, known as the Palace of the Winds, is set to open in December 2021, while the others will be open by June 2022. The structures that can together accommodate nearly 1,000 cars in a built-up area of around 45,000sqm have been designed by top Swiss architect Christian Kerez. The pioneering prototype in the region caters to the visitors and local residents of Muharraq, a city with a pearling narrative which has the 3.5km pearling trail, one of the two Unesco cultural heritage sites.
Of the remaining three structures, one located behind Al Hilal Hospital is a simple driveway while the other two are located near Al Alawi House; one of it has a geometry that mirrors simple shells and the other is a bit more complex and dramatic that can be converted into theatre, concert space or markets. In this, the driving sequence begins with a sculptural tube-like extension of the lowest point of the slab, followed by an opening in the corner of the following floor, and this feel is repeated on the subsequent floors.
Client has awarded the main contract to Kuwait based construction company, Mohammed Abdulmohsin Al-Kharafi & Sons. The value of signed contract is BHD 6,903,750.
Client has inaugurated the first multi-storey car park building within the Pearling Path site project, which is registered on the World Heritage List in the city of Muharraq. Pearling Path site project is one of the most important infrastructure enhancement projects in Bahrain, and through it, culture aims to revive the historical sites in the city of Muharraq. It will also upgrade residential neighbourhoods in order to return the people of Bahrain to the city and provide a cultural destination that attracts visitors from inside and outside Bahrain and attracts cultural tourism. The construction of the remaining three parking lots is scheduled to be completed between the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023. The second multi-storey parking building is located near the Bin Matar Building and the Green Corner, which is the largest, and will be completed by the end of this year. The third parking building is located near Bait Fakhro, south of the Pearling Path site, while the last parking building will be opposite Bait Al Alawi and near Bait Al Jalahma. The architects of the project designed each floor of the new parking lots in a distinctive way, and the focus was on the communication element in the design so that the floor of each floor aligns with the slopes connecting them to reflect the positions of the cultural elements and the ancient heritage contained in the site of the Pearling Path.
